Droplets on the metal
Condensation on air vents
Updated 2026-10-02 · The numbers · Written with Ava, the ClearNest guide
Condensation on air vents in summer means the grille is colder than the dew point of a humid room. The AC is making cold metal while the house is still wet, so water beads on the register. Lower the indoor humidity toward under about 50 percent, keep the filter seated, and do not set the fan to ON all day hoping it will dry out. A vent that drips while the heat is running is a different clue. Look for a humidifier turned up too high or a duct leak, not the same summer sweat.
You can't see most of it. A clean-looking home can still hide moisture behind the walls and in the ducts. The way through is a plan, not a scare.
The vent is not leaking from a pipe. The room is wet.
You see beads on the supply grille, sometimes a dark ring on the ceiling paint around it, and you picture a broken duct raining into the drywall. In July that is often simpler, and still worth fixing. Cold supply air chills the metal. If the room air is humid, that metal is below the dew point, and water forms on it the same way it forms on a cold glass.
Wiping the grille treats the symptom for an hour. The next cycle grows the beads back. Dust sticks to the damp metal, so the vent looks dirty even when you just vacuumed it.
Numbers that tell you which problem you have
Put a hygrometer in the room with the wet vent, not in a drawer. Over about 50 percent while the AC runs means the house is not drying. EPA's wider band is below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50. The vent sweat is the room announcing it is on the wet side of that line.
Check the thermostat fan. ON keeps the blower going when the coil is not removing water, and it can spread damp air without drying it. AUTO ties the fan to a cooling cycle. A dirty filter or a filter with gaps makes the system work worse at the one job that should pull moisture out. Seat the filter. Replace it if it is matted.
If only one vent drips and the ceiling around it is soft or stained in a line, do not assume dew point. That can be a disconnected duct or insulation that is soaked. Photograph it. Soft drywall is not a wipe.
Winter is the other chart. Supply vents should not bead from air conditioning you are not running. If a grille drips while the heat is on, check a humidifier you set and forgot, and whether a duct in a cold space is leaking moist air onto the metal. Window condensation in winter has its own page: winter condensation and mold. Do not crank a humidifier to fix chapped hands and then act surprised when the sills and the vents are wet.
Humidity slider
What does the room hygrometer say while the vent is sweating?
You are in the middle. ClearNest still wants the number under about 50%, and the EPA's wider band stays below 60%.
Dry the air, then see what is left
A dehumidifier in the wettest room is a tool, not a personality. Empty it. If the whole house sits high, the AC may be oversized and short-cycling, cooling the air without a long enough run to dry it. That is an HVAC conversation, not a new candle.
Skip vent-mounted oils. They do not change dew point. If you smell musty when the system starts, pair this page with musty smell when the AC turns on.
The assessment puts humidity and the ducts in one pass instead of two anxious weekends. ClearNest is $19, one time, no subscription. Ava walks the steps with you after you unlock. The vent can stop sweating because the room dried, not because you wiped it harder.
If this is your house, the free 60-second check names the rooms. Ava turns what you can't see into an order you can finish. The protocol is $19 once the plan is on the screen.

Common questions
Will the dripping vent grow mold?+
Damp metal and a damp ceiling ring can, if they stay wet. Dry the room and watch the paint. Small specks on intact metal can be washed once the sweating stops. Fuzzy growth on duct insulation, or a soft ceiling, is the [pro line](/guides/diy-vs-professional-mold-help), not a rag.
Should I insulate the grille?+
Insulating the boot in an attic or a crawl space can help the duct itself stop sweating in a hot, humid cavity. A foam pad stuck on the living room grille does not fix room humidity. Measure the air first so you do not decorate over the real number.
Is this wasting the AC?+
The AC is doing cold. It may not be doing dry. Short cycles, a fan left ON, a humid kitchen and bath load, and a filter gap all lean that way. Fix those before you conclude the machine is broken.
