The number on the dresser
Humidity for mold prevention
Updated 2026-09-28 · Written with Ava, the ClearNest guide
For mold prevention, keep indoor relative humidity under about 50 percent, inside the EPA band of 30 to 50 and always below 60. Measure in the rooms you sleep in, not only next to the thermostat. If the number will not drop, you still have a water source, a ventilation problem, or a dehumidifier that is not draining.
You can't see most of it. A clean-looking home can still hide moisture behind the walls and in the ducts. The way through is a plan, not a scare.
The number is kinder than another spray
You cannot see the air getting wetter, so the house talks to you in other ways. Sills bead up. The basement climbs the stairs. A closet spots. Someone says you should buy a humidifier for the baby's cough, and the glass in that room starts to cry. Humidity for mold prevention is the unglamorous control that decides whether the wipe you did on Sunday survives the week.
Under about 50 percent relative humidity is the ClearNest target. The EPA describes keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50. Below 30 for long stretches can bother skin and noses, so this is not a contest to make the house a desert. It is a refusal to give mold a drink.
Where you measure changes the answer
The hallway hygrometer lies by averaging your life. Put one in the bedroom at night, one in the basement, and look at the bathroom an hour after showers. Write the number when you smell the house, not only when you remember. A spike to 65 percent during a shower is normal if it falls back. A bedroom that lives at 62 percent is an invitation.

What does the bedroom hygrometer say tonight?
You are in the middle. ClearNest still wants the number under about 50%, and the EPA's wider band stays below 60%.
What moves the number
Stop liquid water first: the leak, the full condensate pan, the gasket, the wet rug. A dehumidifier cannot win against a pipe. Vent showers and cooking outside. In air-conditioning season, the system should help, unless the fan is set to ON and stirring humid air without a cold coil. In winter, cold glass plus steamy rooms equals sills. A unit in the basement needs a hose to a drain. A bucket you forget becomes a puddle with a plug.
If you rent, you can still measure, run a portable dehumidifier, and write the landlord with the number and the photo of the sill. You are not being difficult. You are documenting a damp unit.
Make 50 percent a household fact
The assessment uses humidity as a real input, not a vibe. Unlock ClearNest for $99 and the protocol tells you what to do when the number is high because of the washer, the crawlspace, or the fan. Ava can talk you through placement after you are in. The gauge is cheap. The week you start believing it is the week the spots stop getting new neighbors.
If this is your house, the free 60-second check names the rooms. Ava turns what you can't see into an order you can finish. The protocol is $99 once the plan is on the screen.

Common questions
Is 55 percent safe?+
It is inside a gray area under the 60 percent line and above the ClearNest target. If you have active spots or a musty room, push it down toward 50. Do not park at 55 and hope.
Do I need a smart humidifier that adds and removes water?+
You need to know whether you are too wet or too dry. Many mold-prone houses are too wet. Adding moisture on a schedule, without a sensor you trust, is how sills turn black.
Why did the number drop and the smell stay?+
Humidity is not the only reservoir. A wet wall cavity, a drain, or a duct can smell after the room air looks fine. Keep going to the source. The gauge did not fail you.
