A musty smell when the AC turns on usually means the system is picking up damp air or the coil and drain pan have been wet long enough to smell. The first minute is the clue. Do not cover it with a vent clip of perfume. Find whether the return is leaking, whether the condensate drain is clogged, and whether indoor humidity is sitting above about 50 percent.

The house can smell ordinary until the thermostat clicks. Then the living room gets a puff of wet basement, and your kid asks what that smell is. By the time you walk to the vent, it is fainter. Do not seal flues or combustion air while you are in there. Keep a carbon monoxide alarm if the equipment burns fuel.
Second, the return. With the fan on, a stick of incense an inch from the boot seam should not get sucked into the wall cavity. If it does, you are pulling the wrong air. The fix is UL 181 foil tape or mastic, not cloth duct tape. The smoke-test steps are the detailed version.
Third, the humidity of the rooms. Air conditioning should be drying the house. If you are over about 50 percent all afternoon, the system may be oversized, the fan may be set to ON all the time, or a water source is winning. ON runs the blower when the coil is not cold, and it can spread a smell without dehumidifying.

Is a musty AC smell black mold?+
It is a sign of dampness in the air path. It is not a species name. Treat the water and the leaks. If insulation inside the unit is growing something, hire a pro.
Can I just replace the filter?+
Replace a dirty filter, yes. A clean filter does not seal a boot or empty a pan. Do the filter and the leak.
Why is it worse at the start of summer?+
