Mold in air vents is easy to confuse with dust. Dust is gray fluff on the grille. A musty blast when the blower starts, a damp boot, or visible growth on the metal or insulation inside is a moisture and leakage problem. Replace the filter, smoke-test the seams, and call a professional if the insulation itself is growing. Do not fog the duct.

Vacuum the grille outside, wash it if it is metal or a washable plastic, dry it completely, and put it back. Change the filter. Then do the smoke test on the return boots with the fan running: incense an inch from the seam, not inside a flue. Smoke that disappears into the cavity means the return is borrowing wall or crawlspace air. Seal with UL 181 foil tape or mastic. Cloth duct tape is the wrong product. It dries out and the leak comes back.
Do not seal combustion air, a flue, or the burner compartment. Do not run an ozone machine in the duct. If the coil pan is full, that is a drain problem, often a technician, and it will keep any vent job wet.
When the truck is the right call
Growth on internal insulation, a system that served a flooded house, or sewage smell is not a shop-vac day. A duct cleaning without a sealed return and a working condensate drain is a tidy truck and the same smell next month. Ask what they will do about leaks and the drain, not only how many brushes they own.

Is all black dust in a vent mold?+
No. Dust and soot collect on grilles. Smell, moisture, and growth on the boot or insulation are the signs that change the job from cleaning to repair.
Can I spray bleach in the register?+
