The fold you stop looking at
Shower curtain mold that keeps coming back
Updated 2026-10-02 · From a friend · Written with Ava, the ClearNest guide
Shower curtain mold comes back because the curtain stays wet in a room that stays wet. Wash a fabric curtain on hot and dry it completely, or replace a pitted vinyl one. Then make the bathroom actually dry: a fan that exhausts outside, the curtain spread open, and humidity headed back under about 50 percent. Spots on the ceiling are a bigger clue than spots on the plastic.
You can't see most of it. A clean-looking home can still hide moisture behind the walls and in the ducts. The way through is a plan, not a scare.
You have washed it. It still looks guilty.
The bottom hem, the folds, that pink or black speckling that makes you rush the kids through baths so nobody stares at it. You bleach it, you feel harsh, it looks better for a week, and the folds fill in again. A shower curtain is a wet piece of fabric or plastic hanging in a room full of steam. Of course it grows a film if it never really dries.
That film is ugly and it is also information. If the curtain is the only thing specked, you have a drying problem you can finish this weekend. If the ceiling and the caulk are joining in, the room is staying wet longer than a curtain wash can fix. Read mold on the bathroom ceiling for that part, and check whether the fan actually clears steam.
Wash, replace, or stop pretending the plastic will come clean
Fabric liners can go in the wash on hot and then in a hot dryer until they are fully dry. Damp-from-the-washer is how they smell worse. Vinyl and plastic with pits and dark dots in the texture will not come back. Replace them. You are not failing at laundry. The surface is holding water in tiny holes.
When the new one goes up, spread it open after each shower so it is not a wet rope in the corner. Leave a gap so air can get behind it. A curtain bunched on the tub edge stays wet for a day. That is the whole recurrence.
Skip mixing cleaners because you are frustrated. Soap and water, or a wash cycle, and a curtain that can dry will beat a fogger. Do not tape the fan or block it because the noise bothers you in the morning. A timer switch is the kinder fix.
The bathroom can be boring again
You should not have to negotiate with a shower curtain. If the curtain keeps winning, the room is not drying, and that belongs in a house plan instead of another bottle under the sink. Common questions
Is the pink stuff in the curtain dangerous black mold?+
People call a lot of bathroom film black mold. A pink film is often a bacteria that likes soap residue, and dark specks can be mildew. You do not need the species name to dry the curtain. If someone in the house is wheezing in that steam, use another bathroom and talk to a doctor. The curtain still needs to dry either way.
Will a daily bleach spray solve it?+
It might fade spots and irritate lungs, and the curtain will speckle again if it stays wet. Wash or replace, then dry the room. Bleach on a surface that never dries is a chore, not a fix.
Do I need to throw out the bath mat too?+
If it smells sour and does not dry between showers, wash it hot and dry it fully, or replace it. A mat that lives wet is the same problem as the curtain, one step closer to the floor.
