The headache with an address
Mold and headaches that start after you get home
Updated 2026-09-28 · Written with Ava, the ClearNest guide
Mold and headaches overlap when the pain or the pressure shows up at home and eases after you leave, often with a musty smell, a damp room, or stuffy air. Headaches have many causes, so this is not a diagnosis. It is a reason to dry the house, check the air the fan is moving, and tell a doctor if the pain is severe, sudden, or new.
You can't see most of it. A clean-looking home can still hide moisture behind the walls and in the ducts. The way through is a plan, not a scare.

It has a room
You can almost schedule it. The headache waits until you have been home for an hour. It sits behind the eyes. The kids' noise makes it worse, and so does the late afternoon when the air conditioner starts. You drink water. You blame your cycle, the screens, the school emails. Then you spend a Saturday at your mom's and the pain does not come.
Mold and headaches are linked in the way damp, poorly ventilated rooms are linked with feeling unwell. Irritated sinuses create pressure that people call a headache. That is common and miserable. It is not proof of a toxin, and it is not something to ignore if the pain is the worst of your life, comes with weakness, fever, or confusion, or woke you from sleep. Those go to urgent care. The rest of this page is for the headache that seems to live at your address.
What in the house picks a fight with your head
Stale humidity. A bedroom over about 50 percent for days. A bath fan that dumps steam into the attic and back through the ceiling. A return boot that whistles and pulls a crawlspace into the living room. Fragrance sprays you used to cover a smell, which can trigger a head all by themselves. The spray is not a cleanup.
If your head changes within minutes of the system turning on, read the AC smell guide next. The timing is the clue.
Humidity slider
How heavy is the air in the room where the headache starts?
You are in the middle. ClearNest still wants the number under about 50%, and the EPA's wider band stays below 60%.
A two-day experiment that respects your time
Day one: run the bath fan so it actually leaves the house, set a dehumidifier or the air conditioner so the worst room can fall toward 50 percent, and skip the scented cover-up. Sleep with the door open if the room is the problem and the hall is drier. Write one line in the morning: head, room, humidity number.
Day two: if the system is the trigger, leave the fan on for a minute and notice the smell at the return, not just the supply. Do not open a gas flue or seal a combustion-air intake. If the equipment burns fuel, you want a working carbon monoxide alarm. A headache plus dizziness, with fuel-burning equipment, is a CO question until proven otherwise. Leave and call for help.
Then stop doing this alone
The ClearNest assessment is built for this exact fog: where it hurts, when the fan runs, which room. The $99 unlock is the protocol that follows, including the duct seal and the humidity steps, with Ava if you want a voice in the room while you do it. Your doctor still gets the headache that is severe or changing.
If this is your house, the free 60-second check names the rooms. Ava turns what you can't see into an order you can finish. The protocol is $99 once the plan is on the screen.
You can't see it. You can still change it.
The air behind the walls has a protocol.
A clean-looking room can still feel wrong. The free check names your rooms and a plan. The protocol is the calm order after that.

Common questions
Can mold cause migraines?+
Damp air and irritants can aggravate people who already get migraines. That is not the same as saying a spot of mold is the migraine disease. Track home versus away and take the pattern to the clinician who knows your history.
Why does my head hurt in the house and not at work?+
Offices are not magic, but they often have different humidity and you are not sleeping next to a wet wall there. The difference is a clue. Fix the wet wall anyway.
Should I get an MRI before I fix the bathroom?+
Sudden or neurological symptoms need a medical evaluation, which may include imaging. A recurring pressure headache in a musty room still deserves a dry room. Do the medical visit and the building fix as separate, serious tasks.
