The smell by the floor

Is that floor drain smell mold?

Updated 2026-10-02 · Plain expert · Written with Ava, the ClearNest guide

A smell that sits on a floor drain is often a dry trap letting sewer air in, not mold in the walls. Pour water into the drain so the trap refills, and see if the smell fades. A musty smell that fills a room, with no drain nearby, is a different clue. If the odor is a sharp rotten egg through the house, or you have a gas appliance and you are unsure, leave and call the utility. Do not hunt a gas smell with a flame.

You can't see most of it. A clean-looking home can still hide moisture behind the walls and in the ducts. The way through is a plan, not a scare.

A basement floor, where a dry drain can smell like the sewer.

Your nose is in the right zip code. Name the smell before you name the mold.

Basements and laundry rooms collect two different problems that people mash together. One is sewer air from a drain nobody has used since summer. The other is the damp, old-towel smell of a wet room. They ask for different fixes. Bleach in a floor drain will not dry a crawl space, and a dehumidifier will not refill a trap.

Stand over the drain and then stand across the room. A sewer smell is sour, dirty, sometimes like rotten food, and strongest at the grate. A musty smell is flatter, like wet cardboard, and it may be just as strong by the wall, the washer, or the hatch. If you are dealing with the washer door, that guide is washer gasket mold, not this one.

The dry trap is the boring fix people skip

A floor drain has a bend that is supposed to hold water. That water blocks sewer gas. If nobody washes into that drain for weeks, the water evaporates. The pipe becomes a straw. This happens in guest baths, basement floor drains, and AC condensate lines that only run in summer.

Pour a pitcher of water into the drain. If you want, a tablespoon of mineral oil on top slows the next evaporation. Come back in an hour and smell again. If the odor dropped, you found it. If it returns every couple of weeks, the trap is losing water on a schedule. A plumber can talk about a trap primer. You do not need to keep pouring bleach down a pipe that only needed water.

Where is the smell strongest?

Do not turn a drain into a science project

Skip ozone. Skip mixing vinegar and bleach, or anything else, in the hope of a stronger smell-killer. If the grate is gunky, lift it, bag the debris, and wash the grate outside the airstream. You are not opening walls because a trap was dry.

If the smell is musty across the basement and water in the drain changed nothing, switch tracks. Basement smell upstairs and a hygrometer will get you further. Growth on a large wall, sewage backup, or anything you cannot see the edge of belongs with a pro, not a jug of cleaner.

When the house has more than one smell and you are tired of sorting them at 9 p.m., the assessment lines the rooms up. ClearNest is $19, one payment, not a subscription. The plan includes the drains you can settle and the air path you should not guess at. Ava picks up after you unlock.

Common questions

Can mold grow in a floor drain?+

A grimy drain can hold a film. That is not the same as mold in the drywall. Clean the grate, refill the trap, and see what is left. If the room still smells musty away from the drain, look for water in the room, not another chemical.

How often should I add water?+

Whenever that drain goes unused long enough to evaporate. In a dry basement that might be every few weeks. In a laundry room that drains every wash, the trap is probably fine and the smell is somewhere else.

The smell is upstairs too. Is the drain still the cause?+

A dry trap can send odor up a stack, so it is possible. Refill the basement drain and see if the upstairs eases. If upstairs still smells like wet building and the drain smells normal, you have a second problem. Do not stop at the first grate.
