The Washing Machine Smells Musty
You open the washer and it smells like a damp basement. The clothes come out already tired. Front loaders do this most, because the door seals and the fold stays wet. Top loaders do it too if they sit with a lid down on a wet basket or a slimy dispenser. The smell is moisture and residue. It is not a reason to buy a new machine on the first afternoon.
Start with what you can see. Front load: pull back the gasket, wipe the film and the lint, use a cleaner the manual allows, do not mix products, let it dry. Top load or front: pull the detergent drawer if it comes out, rinse the slime, dry it. Leave the door or lid open between loads. Leave the drawer ajar if it was the smelly part. Remove clothes when the cycle ends. A sealed wet drum is a smell factory with a timer you ignored.
Then separate sewer from musty. A rotten smell at the standpipe or floor drain, not inside a dry drum, is a trap that needs water or a plumber. Do not replace a washer to fix a dry floor drain beside it. Smell the drum empty, then smell the drain. Two locations.
A cleaning cycle from the manual, with the product it names, is enough chemistry. After it runs, wipe the fold again. The cycle misses creases. If the empty dry machine smells neutral the next day, go back to normal washing with less detergent than you have been using. Too much soap leaves film, and film holds the smell. If it still smells with a dry gasket and a clean drawer, look at the drain hose and whether it sits in standing water. A hose shoved too far down a standpipe can siphon or sit in a way that keeps a smell close. The manual shows the height. A plumber or an appliance person can fix a hookup that is wrong. You do not have to disassemble the pump.
The laundry room itself, if it has no air and a clogged dryer vent, will make every clean machine smell again. Give the room a path for moisture. Fix a dryer that takes two cycles. The washer is not the only wet object in there.
Do not bleach the machine and then run a load of the kids' clothes to see. Rinse cycles exist. Follow the manual. Keep kids out of the laundry chemistry.
If the cabinet leaks, stop and call a repair tech. A smell is not a leak. A leak is a leak.
Tomorrow morning, smell the machine before you start a load. That is the test of last night's open door. Neutral means keep the habit and stop shopping. Musty means the drawer or the drain, not another tablet. One morning sniff saves a cart of products that all promise the same miracle.
Wash a small load of towels you can dry fully, right away, after the machine smells clean. If the towels come out fine and smell off only after sitting in the drum, you proved the sitting was the problem. If they come out musty from a clean-smelling drum, look at the drain and the detergent amount again. The towel is a witness.
Tell the household why the door is open. Someone will close it to make the room look finished. The look is the smell. A cracked door is the finished version. Put a note on the machine if you need to. It is cheaper than a new gasket.
This is a house check, not a diagnosis. Symptoms go to a doctor, and big wet repairs go to a licensed pro.
