A Smell Under the Kitchen Sink

The cabinet under the kitchen sink is a small room that nobody airs out. It holds a garbage bin, spare sponges, a leaky cleaner bottle, and two pipes that sweat or drip when they feel like it. You open the door to grab a bag and the smell rolls out, musty or sour or a little like a drain. The rest of the kitchen can smell fine.

Take everything out. Everything. The smell test is useless while a wet sponge and a torn box of dishwasher pods are in there. Set it all on the floor and look at the cabinet box itself. Bottom panel stained. Swollen particle board. A soft spot under the vinyl. Those marks are a history of water even if it is dry this minute.

With a flashlight, follow the supply lines and the drain. Dry them with a paper towel, then wrap a dry towel around the trap and the supply connections. Run the water for a minute, then check the towel. A wet spot you can find is a better afternoon than a new cabinet. Tightening a loose slip nut is reasonable if you know how the nut works and you do not crack old plastic. If the pipe is corroded, if the shutoff valve weeps when you touch it, or if you are forcing something, stop and call a plumber. A forced valve is how a small smell becomes a flood.

The trap, the bent section of drain under the sink, holds water so sewer gas stays in the pipe. If the sink is rarely used, a vacation rental, a bar sink, that water evaporates and the cabinet smells like a drain. Run the water for several seconds so the trap refills. If the smell was a dry trap, it should fade. If it comes back the same day with the trap full, you are not done. A vent problem or a leak on the drain side needs a plumber, not another box of baking soda.

Look at the cleaners while you are in there. A cracked bleach bottle or a leaking trash bag smells "musty" to a tired nose and is not moisture in the wood. Throw out anything wet, wash the bin, and leave the door open for an afternoon. Then recheck. If the empty dry cabinet still smells like soil or a basement, go back to the pipes and the floor of the cabinet.

The sink deck and the caulk at the backsplash matter too. Water runs off the counter, slips behind the rim, and lands in the cabinet. Press along the back edge. If the particle board is mush, the water path is from above, and a new trap will not fix it. Drying and replacing a rotten cabinet bottom is sometimes a carpenter or a handy person who does cabinets. Living with a swollen box and a plug-in is how the smell becomes the kitchen's personality.

Check the dishwasher side if the smell is more sour than dusty. The connection and the air gap can leak a slow amount that sits in the insulation. Same towel test while it runs. Pulling a dishwasher out is a heavier job. If you are not comfortable shutting off water and sliding the machine, leave it for someone who does that work.

Once it is dry, keep the habit small. No sopping sponge in a closed cup. Trash out before it sweats. A look under the sink when you change the garbage bag. Most repeat smells are repeat drips.

After the cabinet is dry and empty, put back only what belongs. Leave a paper towel on the cabinet floor for two days. If it stays dry and the smell stays gone, you are done except for the habit of looking. If the towel dampens, you still have a drip, and no liner or scented disk belongs on top of it until the towel stays dry.

This is a house check, not a diagnosis. Symptoms go to a doctor, and big wet repairs go to a licensed pro.
