Should I Clean My Air Ducts
Someone offers to clean the ducts because the house is dusty or musty. Sometimes ducts are dirty enough to matter. Often the pitch arrives before the cheaper causes. Dust and musty air have a usual order. Skip the order and you pay for a cleaning that does not touch a bypassing filter, a wet pan, or a return sucking from a damp crawl space.
Do these first. Filter that fits, arrow right, no gaps, power off when you change it. Returns: streaks, gaps, incense smoke pulled into a seam, foil tape on clean duct metal, never on a flue. Cooling: the outdoor drain drips when the AC runs. Moisture: the basement, the bath fan, the crawl space, whatever matches the smell. If the musty air is crawl space air, cleaning the duct metal does not dry the crawl space. The blower will pull the smell again next cycle.
Consider cleaning when those are handled and you still see debris, or a tech shows you a duct full of material, or you have gone through a renovation that filled the system with drywall dust. Ask what method they use, what they will not do, and whether they sell sprays and coatings as part of the visit. A coating is not a substitute for finding water. You can decline the spray. A company that leads with mold fear and a same-day price is a reason to slow down, not a reason to panic.
You do not need a scary camera story to change a filter. If someone shows a picture, ask where in the house it is and what they propose besides cleaning. A disconnected duct in a wet crawl space is a repair. A dusty register is a vacuum and a filter. Match the work to the picture.
Do not pay to clean ducts and leave the filter slot leaking. The new dust will be the old dust's cousin. Do the seal and the filter the same week if you do the cleaning. And do not run the system filterless because a cleaner is coming next month.
Musty that fades when a drain is cleared or a bath fan finally exhausts outdoors was never a duct-cleaning problem. Be glad. You are allowed to stop.
Write what you already fixed. If you still want a cleaning, you will hire it with a straight face instead of a scare.
Get the price for cleaning alone, in writing, before anyone adds treatment. If the visit only makes sense when the spray is included, you are buying a spray. You can say no. A plain cleaning quote and a separate repair quote for a crushed duct are easier to judge than a bundle named after fear.
Ask whether they will leave the filter slot and the return gaps alone. If the answer is yes, plan to handle those yourself or with a tech the same week. Cleaning a system that leaks attic air is a short celebration. The leaks are the part that keeps the dust coming.
After any cleaning, run the system and smell the first minute. Better, same, or worse. Same usually means the smell was never loose debris. Worse means ask what they applied. Better means enjoy it and keep the filter honest so you do not hire the same truck out of habit next year.
Stuffy mornings that worry you belong with a doctor. Anything that means cutting drywall or working on gas equipment belongs with a licensed pro.
