The Kids' Room Carpet Smells

Kids' carpets live hard lives. Spills, rainy socks, art water, a cup tipped at bedtime. Sometimes the smell is one old spill. Sometimes the pad is damp because the room is over a crawl space or on a slab, or because a humidifier ran all winter. The nose says musty. The first move is not a steam cleaner.

Find the spot. Walk it in socks or kneel and smell sections. Press a paper towel down. If moisture comes up, the pad is wet and shampoo is more water. Dry first. Small and clean, like a one-time water cup, can dry with air and time, belongings off that patch. Large, or anything from a toilet or a drain, is not a blog-sized dry. That is a flooring or water pro, because the pad can stay wet after the top feels fine.

If the towel stays dry and one area smells, it may be a spill that dried dirty. Clean that area with a little cleaner and as little water as you can, then dry it. Do not soak a pad that was finally dry. Enzyme cleaner is for organic spills, used as the bottle says, not mixed with other products. Ventilate. Kids out of the room until it is dry.

If the whole carpet smells and the room's gauge is high, you are smelling humidity in the fibers, plus whatever lives in the plush and the closet. Turn off the extra mist. Run the numbers down toward under about 50 percent. Wash the soft toys. Then see if the carpet calms. A new carpet in a wet room will smell like the old one by the next season.

Over a crawl space or basement, a carpet smell along the floor with a musty level below is the lower level talking through the floor. Look downstairs or at the hatch, safely. Deodorizing the rug upstairs will not dry a crawl space. Mention the smell direction if you hire help.

Do not powder the carpet and vacuum it into the air. You will move scent and dust. Do not fog the room because the rug embarrassed you before a playdate. Dry, clean the actual spot, and fix the moisture.

If the smell is only next to the window, check the sill and the pad at that wall. Condensation drips can wet a carpet edge every night and dry by noon, which is why you never catch it unless you look at wake-up.

Write spot or whole room, towel wet or dry, gauge high or fine. That is the fork between drying, a small clean, and a lower-level problem.

Give a dry pad a day before you decide it failed. A fan in the room, door open, no extra water. Smell it the next afternoon, not five minutes after you panicked. Carpets hold odor while they finish drying, and a premature shampoo is how a cup of water becomes a week of must.

If you do hire a cleaner, say whether the pad was wet. A good cleaner does not want to steam a soaked pad either. If they only sell fragrance, you are the one who has to insist on dry. You live with the room after they leave.

Move the bed or the rug corner when you test. Kids' rooms hide the smell under the part of the rug you never lift. The visible center can be innocent while the edge along the outside wall is the whole complaint.

Stuffy mornings that worry you belong with a doctor. Anything that means cutting drywall or working on gas equipment belongs with a licensed pro.
