The Furnace Smells When It Starts
Startup is the whole complaint. The furnace is quiet, then it runs, and there is a smell. Between cycles the house is fine. You do not have to know the model number to sort this. You have to name the smell and notice whether it fades.
Dusty or lightly burnt, first runs of the season, fading as the metal heats and stays warm: that is often dust that sat on a heat surface. Change the filter with the power off. Match the size. Point the arrow correctly. Open a window for a few minutes if you want it gone faster. Stay around the first cycle. Fading and no smoke is the boring path, and boring is what you want.
Musty at startup is not burnt dust, even if it annoys you as much. The blower is pulling air from somewhere that smells like a closed basement and delivering it to the vents. Smell a supply, then smell the basement door and the area around the furnace with the fan off and with the fan on. If the equipment area smells musty on its own, look for a wet pan, a leaking humidifier on the furnace, a clogged cooling drain left from summer, or stored boxes tight against the unit. If the smell appears in the rooms only when the fan runs, look at return leaks. A gap at a return grille can pull cavity air. Incense smoke, an inch away, fan on, will show a suck into the gap. Foil tape on clean metal. Never on a flue or a combustion opening.
Sharp electrical smell, hot plastic, smoke, a smell of gas, or a breaker that trips is not a filter week. Turn the system off. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility from outside. For smoke or a scorch smell, keep the cabinet closed and call a licensed pro. Do not remove safety doors to watch it run. Some doors have switches for a reason.
A humidifier mounted on the furnace can add a startup smell if the pad is slimy or the water is sitting. If you can shut the humidifier off for a day without creating another problem, that is a fair test. A musty drop when the humidifier is off tells you where to clean or where to call. A furnace humidifier you have never opened is worth a look in the manual's basic maintenance sense, or a tech if you do not want to touch water next to gas.
Listen while you smell. A new rattle, a whistling at the filter door, or air hissing at a duct joint is part of the note you will wish you had written. Startup smell plus a loose filter door means dusty attic or closet air is joining the party.
Write three words after the next two cycles: dusty, musty, or sharp. Add fades or stays. That is the sort of record that keeps a service call short and keeps you from replacing a furnace because the first cold night surprised you.
One cycle is not a verdict. Run the note on the next two startups after the filter is new and, in summer history, after you know whether the cooling drain drips. A dusty smell that quits is done. A musty smell that survives a dry new filter belongs to the return, the pan, or the humidifier pad. A sharp smell that survives anything belongs to a shut-off system and a licensed pro. Three lines on paper will keep those from becoming one confused story.
This is a house check, not a diagnosis. Symptoms go to a doctor, and big wet repairs go to a licensed pro.
