Mold on a Front Load Washer Gasket

Front load washers seal with a rubber gasket, and the fold in that rubber holds water, lint, and detergent. Leave the door shut and the fold stays wet. A dark film shows up. The next load smells musty before it is dry. The gasket is not a moral verdict. It is a crease that needs to be dry and wiped.

Pull the fold back and look. Wipe out lint, coins, and the film with a cloth and a cleaner the machine's maker allows. Many people use a mild washer cleaner or a simple wipe with the product the manual names. Do not mix chemicals in the fold. Do not pour a cup of bleach into the rubber because a video did. You can damage the gasket and gas the laundry room. Ventilate. Gloves if you want them. If the rubber is torn, cracked, or the film is under a failing seal that leaks on the floor, the gasket may need replacement. That can be a repair person. A surface wipe will not fix a split that leaks.

Leave the door ajar between loads so the drum and the fold can dry. Leave the detergent drawer open a little if it stays slimy. Pull wet clothes out promptly. A finished load left overnight in a sealed drum will smell even if the gasket was clean in the morning. That habit and the wipe are the maintenance. A new gasket in a house that shuts the door every time will look like the old gasket.

Run a cleaning cycle if the manual describes one, with the cleaner it allows, not a pile of products. Then wipe the fold again, because the cycle does not always reach the crease you can see. Smell the drum when it is empty and dry. Neutral means you are done. Musty means something is still wet: the fold, the drawer, or a drain standpipe that is a sewer smell instead. Those are different. A rotten drain note is the trap, not the rubber. Pour water, and call a plumber if a full trap still smells like sewer.

The room needs air too. A laundry closet with no vent and a dryer that is restricted will keep the gasket damp. One problem at a time. Door ajar is still the first change.

Do not use the washer as a hamper. Do not shut the door on a wet drum because the kitchen looks tidier. The tidy version is a door cracked and a fold that is not slimy.

Make the ajar door a house rule for a month and wipe the fold on Sundays. That is the whole program. If the film returns in a week despite a dry drum, look at detergent slime in the drawer and at whether the machine sits in a closet that never dries. More cleaner on the same wet rubber is not a new plan.

Use the amount of detergent the machine actually wants. Extra soap feeds the film in the fold and in the drawer. The cap is not a challenge. Less soap, a wiped fold, and an open door beat a special tablet you leave in a shut machine.

If a repair person replaces the gasket, ask them to show you the fold to wipe. Then keep the door habit or you will buy the same rubber twice. The part is not a personality change. The dry fold is.

If someone is wheezing around the products, stop and air the room. Health questions go to a doctor. A leaking machine that needs the cabinet opened is a repair tech, a licensed pro for the electrical and water work if that is what it takes.

Write whether the smell was the fold or the drain. Wipe, dry, and recheck tomorrow.
