Ducts Running Through a Damp Space

Flex duct or metal duct in a crawl space lives in the damp. If a joint is open, the blower can pull crawl air into the rooms or blow conditioned air into the dirt. If the duct lies in wet soil, it can smell like the soil. People smell the vent upstairs and want the duct cleaned. The bay the duct sits in is the rest of the sentence.

From the hatch, safely, look. Ducts off their hangers, a silver sleeve split open, a connection that fell off, water on the outside of the duct in summer, insulation on the duct that is soaked. Photos. Do not crawl through a wet, tight, dark space to tug on a duct with one hand. That is how repairs become rescues. A technician who works in crawl spaces can reconnect, support, and seal joints that are actually duct. Tell them about the smell when the fan starts.

The space still needs to be drier. A perfect reconnection in a pond will sweat and smell again. Downspouts, standing water, a ground that stays wet. The duct work and the drainage are partners. Doing only the shiny tape is a partial. Doing only a dehumidifier you cannot safely install in a flooded bay is a partial too.

Returns that pull from the crawl space through a gap upstairs are the indoor end of the same problem. Incense at the grille, fan on. Foil tape on metal you understand. The crawl repair does not replace that check. Air will use the hole you leave.

Do not tape a flue or a combustion-air pipe because it runs through the same space and looks round. If you cannot tell duct from vent, do not tape. Gas appliances are not a smell project. If you smell gas, get out and call the utility from outside.

Musty air that stops when the fan is off and starts when it is on, plus a damp crawl space, is a strong story. Bring it. A cleaning truck that never enters the crawl space will not see a duct in the mud. Ask if the visit includes that bay. If it does not, you are buying a different service.

Write what the hatch shows and whether the upstairs smell tracks the blower. Those two lines hire the right person.

Ask the tech to show you the repaired joint on their phone if you are not going in the space. A picture of a supported connection is the receipt that matters. A scented vent upstairs is not. You want the before and after of the duct, plus a note about whether the bay itself was wet.

Do not stack storage against a crawl access you may need. The next leak will not wait for you to move shelves. Leave the hatch usable. The smell is annoying. A blocked hatch during an actual water event is worse.

If the ducts are dry, sealed, and off the soil and the rooms still smell only over the crawl space with the fan off, the air path may be the floor, not the duct. Say that. It changes the work from tape to the hatches, the penetrations, and the moisture in the dirt.

If the tech says the ducts are fine and the soil is wet, believe both halves. Pay for the look. Then spend the next dollar on the water, not on a second opinion of the same metal. A dry bay is what lets a good duct stay a good duct.

If breathing is the thing that scares you, call a doctor. If the fix means wiring, gas, or tearing into structure, call a licensed pro.
